Effective Microorganisms™ can help control the tremendous amounts of ammonia found on large poultry operations. Ammonia gas rising from the litter can burn the feet of the birds and cause blindness in the birds. At very high concentrations ammonia becomes lethal. The average poultry house will have about 20-29ppm of ammonia.
Poultry Odor Control with Effective Microorganisms
The trick to increasing the general health of the operation (and improve public relations) is to reduce, or eliminate, the ammonia. Beneficial microbes naturally break up ammonia. Houses using EM•1® Agricultural have had ammonia levels as low as 0ppm with an average of 5-6ppm. As ammonia is an oxidative substance, it is putrefactive and supports the growth of pathogenic microbes. EM•1® has an antioxidant effect on manure and will resist putrefaction, prevent noxious odors, reduce attraction to pests, and control pathogen growth.
Additionally a simple and affordable EM•1® maintenance plan can also increase production, decrease condemnation rates, and increase feed conversion, thereby increasing the grower's profits.
The methods below are geared more for broilers. Layers, since they are in production longer, require repeated applications of AEM•1®. The AEM•1® is usually applied through a misting or fogging system to control the odors in the poultry barns.
Prior to Placement of Birds (Done once per flock):
- Make Activated EM•1®.
- When pH drops below 3.8, AEM•1® is ready to use.
- Clean poultry barn.
- Spray & wash all surfaces of poultry barn with a diluted solution of AEM•1® and water at 1:50, every 7 to 10 days
- Add litter
- Spray or top-dress AEM•1® onto litter (whether fresh or caked-out). The minimum amount of AEM•1® to be used should be at 0.001 gallon per square foot (1 gallon per 1,000 square feet) of poultry barn. This calculated amount should be diluted in just enough water to cover floors adequately.
Total AEM•1® per poultry barn will vary on the size of the barn and the age of the litter.
Additional Options:
- To increase the benefits of the odor control, it would be advisable to ferment the litter at least two weeks prior to use, essentially making it into bokashi
- Alternatively, you can add bokashi to the litter as a top dressing.
