2015 is Marked "International Year of Soils”
The Impact of Healthy Soil
2015 was just recently named the "International Year of Soils" by the United Nations. The United Nations wanted to bring attention to the importance of soil health in the name of protecting different ecosystems and successful agricultural production. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) held an event recently in
support of the International Year of Soils stateside. Soil health plays such an important role in our food productions and the protection of wildlife and ecosystems all across this country.
Many farmers rely on the NRCS to help them improve their agricultural practices to ensure sustainable farming practices so that we can prevent ecological and agriculture disasters like the "Dust Bowl" droughts throughout the 1930s. Healthy soil also plays a role in controlling important aspects of global warming such as carbon dioxide storage and helping ecosystems survive extreme weather changes. Healthy and happy soil is the key to success for food production and a happy environment. With a fast growing global population, the world as a whole needs to ensure sustainable soil use and farming practices in order to meet the rising food demands of a growing developing world.
