As we have learned, the beneficial bacteria found in microbial inoculants can be used to restore imbalanced outdoor environments. These microbial compounds can be applied as a biofertilizer or as a soil amendment, and can be used in water treatment as well as a compost or anaerobic fermentation accelerant. Beyond their myriad of outdoor uses, these remarkable agents have many safe and effective indoor uses as well.
The following are some popular indoor applications for microbial inoculants.
Home Deodorizer & Odor Control
Microbial inoculants can be used as a chemical-free deodorizer for controlling household odors, particularly “natural” odors from things like pets, cigarettes / cigars, garbage, drains and more. Simply dilute the microbial inoculant with water, and spray the affected area where the smells are permeating from. The bioremediation bacteria will attack the materials causing the smell, eliminating odors on contact. Microbial inoculants are especially good at eliminating animal odors, which is why they are used for hydrogen sulfide odor and ammonia odor control at large-scale livestock farms – a true testament to the compound’s effectiveness!
Microbial inoculants are more than a deodorizer, they also can be used as an all-natural cleaning agent to reduce or replace all the chemical cleaners in your home. The beneficial bacteria attack and neutralize unwanted elements returning the area to a healthy, hygienic state. The compound is all-natural and utilizes no harsh chemicals or synthetic scents, making it ideal for homes with children, pets and chemically sensitive individuals.
Effective Treatment for Indoor Plant Life
Just as a microbial inoculant can be used in the garden or field; it can also be applied safely in the home to houseplants and cut flowers, without introducing toxic chemical compounds. Regular use of the microbial inoculant will add enzymes, trace minerals, and various B-complex vitamins to the plant environment, all of which support the growth of healthy houseplants. Start by treating the soil with the microbial inoculant and then water the plants once or twice a week with water enhanced with the microbial inoculant. If you are using EM•1® Microbial Inoculant, simply add 1 ounce (2 Tablespoons) of EM•1® to every gallon of water you use to water your plants. Likewise, spritz plant leaves once or twice each week to promote a healthy plant environment, which will allow indoor plants to thrive, with longer blooms and brighter flowers. Please note: be sure to fertilize your plants regularly in order to provide food to both the plants and the beneficial microbe environment you are promoting.
Septic Tank Treatment
While not exactly “indoors”, if your home has a septic tank, the septic tanks is undoubtedly of critical importance to your family and over-all quality of life in the home. Microbial inoculants can be used as a septic tank additive, or cleaner, that improves the over-all health of the septic environment, eliminating odors, lowering maintenance costs, improving drainage and preventing groundwater pollution.
