Effective Microorganisms® (EM®) have been successfully increasing livestock health worldwide for decades. The beneficial microorganisms can be used in a variety of ways in and around animals.
Spraying EM-1® inside exhibits and living areas will improve the microbial environment of the whole area, including the intestinal microflora of the animals, and maintain the health of the entire operation. In addition, EM-1® will significantly decrease foul odors from urine and manure. Because EM-1® can increase the immune system and reduce pathogens, it is possible to reduce the usage of antibiotics and disinfectants to prevent diseases.
Zoos can benefit in a variety of ways such as chemical-free cleaning of exhibits, landscaping maintenance, and adding it as a probiotic in animal diets.

WHAT IS EM-1®?
EM-1® is a liquid bacterial product comprising of three groups of beneficial microbes: Yeast, Photosynthetic Bacteria and Lactic Acid Bacteria. ACTIVATING EM-1®
EM-1® microbial products can be grown one time for economical purposes. This "growing" or "brewing" process is called Activation (it used to be called "extension").
It does not mean the microbes in EM-1® are not active; they are. It is just a method EMRO developed years ago to enhance the product. Activation involves taking one part EM-1®, 1 part molasses, and 20 parts water. LEARN HOW TO ACTIVATE HERE...
Note: EM-1® can be used without activating it. However for large scale operations, it is far more economical. If activation is not something your operation is able to do, please contact us for other options.

ODOR CONTROL FOR ANIMAL EXHIBITS
- Exhibits and Living areas: Spray areas with a solution of Activated EM-1® and water at a rate of 2 oz per gallon of water. Spray at least 3 times per week.
- Aquatic Environments (pools, tanks, aquariums): Add 1 part Activated EM-1® per 10,000 parts water monthly. Safe for animals and fish.
- Manure: Load manure into a compost pile and spray with a solution of Activated EM-1® and water at a rate of 4 oz per gallon of water. Mound and cover with a tarp. Turn pile once per week for 4-6 weeks. Because the microbes ferment the compost, no ammonia or sulfur smells should be present.
LANDSCAPING AND HORTICULTURE
- Soil and Plant Health: Activated EM-1® can be sprayed onto the soil surface or used as a foliar spray for all plants. Mix 1oz of Activated EM-1® per 1 gallon of water or inject it into an irrigation system at a rate of 5 gallons per acre for grazing areas. See here for more details on plant care...

- Water Features: Add 32oz of Activated EM-1® per 10,000 gallons of water on a weekly basis. This will keep water clear and odor-free. Safe to use in water features around animals or with fish.

- Indoor Plants: Activated EM-1® can be used to care for indoor plants. Water with a solution of 1oz Activated EM-1® per 1 gallon of water. APC500™ can also be used to clean indoor plant leaves from dust accumulation. Simply spray leaves with 1oz per gallon of water and wipe clean.
EATING ESTABLISHMENTS
- Food Wastes: With our TeraKashi® Bokashi, food waste can be fermented in an airtight container and used in worm bins, to feed animals and added to compost piles for nutrient-rich fermented organic matter.
- Kitchens: Use APC500™ to wash counters, floors, walls, windows, refrigeration units, stoves, and carpets. Dump solution down the drain to add more microbes to the system.
- Septic Systems: Pour Activated EM-1® down any train leading to the tank at a rate of 1 quart per 1,000 gallons holding capacity.
