Wondering What To Plant in March?

March is a transitory month between winter and spring. This means the weather is starting to get warmer, and you can finally start sowing your seeds and transitioning them from the inside to the outdoors.

Let’s take a look at a few vegetables you can consider growing during this month and how you can improve the germination process with EM-1 Microbial Inoculant and EM Bokashi.

Tips for planting vegetables in March

March can be a confusing time to start planting your seedlings and sowing your garden, especially if you live in a place that has colder temperatures. However, it can also be exciting since you're finally able to get back in the garden and start preparing for springtime.

The key to proper growth during winter and early spring is seed germination. To put it in simple terms: seed germination is the process of organisms growing from seeds. This occurs when the seeds have water, oxygen, and the proper temperature. If there is still frost on the ground or if the temperatures are still too low, your seeds will remain dormant and won’t have the nutrients to survive and flourish when springtime rolls around.

When choosing which vegetables to plant in March, be mindful of the types of conditions the vegetables thrive in and use that knowledge to decide if you want to start growing them inside before sowing your garden.

What Vegetables Should You Plant In March

Spinach

This leafy green is a great vegetable for springtime harvest because it loves the colder weather, and you’ll be able to enjoy your spinach throughout springtime. Spinach won’t withstand the high levels of heat. So, if it's a hot summer, you might only get to enjoy it during the spring. However, if you live in a cooler climate, your spinach may thrive throughout the summertime. We recommend planting it in early March or about four to six weeks before the last frost.

Carrots

These can typically be harvested in 30 days and are considered a fast-growing vegetable, which makes them great for planting in March. You’ll want to keep in mind that the ground will need to be thawed or not frozen when you go to plant them outside. If you’re going to start the seeds out in a container inside, make sure they are at least 12 inches deep.

Radishes

Did you know radishes are the fastest growing vegetable? They only take 24 days to be ready for harvest! This means you can plant them in March or early April and enjoy them throughout springtime and summer. Radishes are a cool-weather crop: so you can replant them in August or September for fall harvest.

Tomatoes

These are a must-plant in the early spring and will provide you with delicious tomatoes throughout the summer. Keep in mind: tomatoes love warmer weather. If it’s still too cold for the seedlings outside, you may want to start them inside and move them outside near the end of March. Keep in mind: tomatoes are a quick germinator. Once you get them planted, they'll start to take off. For this reason, some people like to plant them near the end of March or early April.

Squash

You can plant squash throughout March and April to expect a summertime harvest. This applies to almost all types of squash, even winter squash. We recommend being mindful of how much squash you plant. Squash tends to keep growing, and one plant can easily feed two people throughout summer. If you want to plant more, get ready to surprise your neighbors, friends, and family with tons of squash throughout summer.

Snow Peas

These do great when you plant them during colder weather seasons, so you never need to worry if spring is coming early or not. Not only that but they also get brought to harvest rather quickly. So you can expect to enjoy them throughout the spring and summer months. Don't forget: timing is key for snow peas. If the weather is too warm, they won't mature when it comes time to harvest. We recommend planting them in early March for best results.

4 easy and effective steps to successful germination in March

Pre-soak your seeds

During colder winter months, many seeds remain dormant until they are exposed to the proper conditions and moisture to help them grow. Pre-soaking can help your seeds germinate faster. We recommend soaking them overnight before planting your seeds.

Consider the seed's environment

Seeds need the right environment to thrive and germinate. That's why if it’s too cold outside, you'll want to consider starting your seeds indoors or in a greenhouse. Once the weather looks better outside, you can transition to the outdoors. Taking this extra step ensures they properly germinate.

Overwatering can lead to poor seed germination

When you overwater your seedlings, you're reducing the amount of oxygen they receive. At the same time, if the soil is always dry, that means your seeds aren’t getting enough water to start the germination process. Be mindful of how much water you choose to give your vegetable seeds and check in on the soil frequently.

Use a seed germination kit

The right Dynamic Garden Duo can provide your plants with the nutrients they need to grow more vigorously and robustly. Our TeraGanix seed germination kit contains EM-1 Microbial Inoculant and EM Bokashi Bran. Once you make the switch, you’ll notice how effortlessly EM-1 Microbial Inoculants will improve the texture of your soil and help with proper drainage, which is a must-have to avoid seed decomposing. Both products work together to introduce antioxidants and minerals into your soil and replace unwanted chemical fertilizers.

PRO TIP: We recommend treating your seedlings with EM-1 so they can have properly functioning hormones and a healthy microbiome. You won’t believe what this small change can do for your garden this spring!

March is an exciting time for gardeners. As the days get longer and the sun continues to get warmer, you may feel an urge to get your seedlings planted in the ground right away. Don’t be afraid to take things slow, consider the environmental factors, and do everything you can to encourage proper seed germination. If you’re ready to enhance your soil, our team at TeraGanix is here to help.
