Effective Microorganisms® in Agriculture
Dr. Teruo Higa pioneered the methodology of repeated applications of inoculating soils and plants with microbes in farming systems. The USDA learned of Effective Microorganisms® in the early 1990's and experimented with it finding many beneficial effects for cropping systems. Today, Ag1000®, a ready to use concentrate of Effective Microorganisms®, is offered for large commercial clients that are looking for hundreds of gallons of product at a time. Ag1000 is available in 55-gallon, 275-gallon, and in bulk delivery over 1,000 gallons through TeraGanix, Inc. and our licensed manufacturers in the United States. Ag1000® is ONLY available in the US and Canada.
Ag1000® is not a fertilizer. It is a complex, fermented liquid containing live naturally-occurring, NON-GMO microbes and their metabolites. It makes nutrients more available to plants, however, you still need to use Ag1000® in conjunction with fertilizers. It is used to improve soil tilth in all soil types. Ag1000® is available in two forms: Conventional and Ag1000® Organic (OMRI Listed).
Foliar sprays of Ag1000® are most effective when applied either early mornings or late evening. For soils, the key to success with Effective Microorganisms® is to apply lots of organic matter (available carbon) with it to provide a home and food for the microorganisms. Humates are a great source of available carbon. Humified compost is also a great source of carbon, fungi, and micronutrients. Conventional farmers can use Ag1000® with most of thier programs...as long as they do not mix synthetic chemicals with the microbes in concentrated, non-diluted, form. In other words, do not store the Ag1000® in a tank with fertilizers or pesticides. Many pesticides, such as RoundUp are antibiotic in nature and kill all the microbes within seconds of mixing. Therefore, if pesticides are to be used, please wait at least 48 hours between applications of pesticide and Ag1000®.
Benefits of Ag1000® :
- Promotes soil aggregate formation and soil compaction resistance.
- Improves seed germination and root development.
- Increases nutrient availability.
- Improves crop quality: size, color, and shelf life.
- Helps improve soil structure and porosity.
- Maximizes conversion of organic matter into soil humus.
- Increases beneficial native microbial populations.
Uses: For all horticultural applications.
Directions: (Please visit each sub category below for more detailed applications per crop) Apply Ag1000® through an irrigation system, boom sprayer, backpack sprayer, fan sprayer, hand pump sprayer, or an electrostatic sprayer. Ag1000® can be applied once a week during periods of extreme drought or rain and once a month for maintenance.

Effective Microorganisms® in Field Crops
Combining with Fertilizers
Ag1000® Fertilizer Injection Setup
It is fine to use conventional fertilizers with Ag1000®. However, concentrated fertilizers will kill the microbes almost immediately if mixed together in concentrated form. To avoid this, you need to set up separate tanks, one for your Ag1000® and one for the fertilizer. You can use one injection pump to pump from each tank into the irrigation line using a line splitter before the intake of the pump. The dilution with water is great enough to prevent the microbes from dying at that point.

Combining with Pesticides
- Don't Do It. Pretty much all of your synthetic pesticides on the market kill every one of the microbes in Ag1000®, some do it on contact. With fumigants start applying Ag1000® as close to the end of the residual kill time before applying the Ag1000®.
- However, with the biological pesticides the two products work well together.
Seed Treatment:
Soak seeds one day before planting in a 1:1,000 Ag1000®/water solution. If the seed cannot be soaked, moisten the seed before planting with the same 1:1,000 Ag1000®/water solution.
Transplanting:
Use as a drench at 4% solution. Ag1000® can be added with other products, such as organic fertilizers, mineral supplements and compost teas during this process.
Foliar Treatments:
Apply Ag1000® with a sprayer at a 1.5- 3 gallons per acre diluted with water for coverage. It is best to apply Ag1000® as part of a foliar nutrient program once per week throughout the growing season.
Soil Treatment:
The goal is to get 40 gallons Ag1000® per acre per year. An easy rule of thumb for growers using irrigation systems is to apply 1-3 gallon of Ag1000® per acre per week, depending on the length of the growing season. Ag1000® can also be applied 5-8 times during the growing season using spraying equipment if irrigation systems are not in use. If continuous cropping, increase the rate to 1 gallon per week for a total of 52 gallons per acre per year.
Post Harvest:
A post-harvest treatment is made at a rate of 1-5 gallons per acre to accelerate lignin and cellulose breakdown of organic matter, which is then turned in prior to next season's sowing.
Cleaning Irrigation Lines:
Clean irrigation lines with an application of 5 gallons per acre, let sit in lines for 4-5 days, and flush. Depending on how hard the water is, this may need to be done 2-4 times per year. The cost of the Ag1000® is less than sulfuric and it is much safer than sulfuric or bleach.
Well Treatment:
Wells can be treated as well. Inject 55 gallons into a well head and let sit for 3-4 weeks. Flush and repeat one or two more times depending on the color of the water that flushes out. If it clears after the first flush there is no need to repeat the application.

Plants from 10 row feet were removed and seed cotton from each position was removed and placed into designated box compartment and a token used to represent each boll for total number by position. Each fruiting position was weighed using gram scales. Both main axis and vegetative bolls are accounted for.
Results:
In this study it was shown that 10-20gal/acre applied over 4 applications resulted in the greatest overall plant growth. However, 2 gal/acre whether applied 4x or 6x resulted in the highest overall yield. The application of 60gal/acre showed little benefit verses 10gal/acre and actually showed a decrease in plant growth and yield when compared with 20gal/acre.

Worldwide, chile peppers (Capsicum annum L) represent a huge market for several crop-‐producing areas in the desert Southwest (New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and northern Mexico). In the United States, over 24,000 acres of chilies are produced and equate to over $120 million in production value (E. Babcock and Silvertooth 2010).
In the desert southwest of Arizona, New Mexico, and California chili peppers are grown for both fresh vegetables and dried for a multitude of culinary products such as chili powder and paprika as well as seed for future production. As of the latest Agricultural census (NASS 2007), New Mexico is the leading state in chili production with 15,567 acres followed by Arizona with 5,510 acres.
Ag1000™ is made up of three types of microorganisms; lactic acid bacteria, photosynthetic bacteria, and yeast. In Ag1000™ treated soils, polysaccharides and other beneficial organic acids and enzymes in the soil help build stable aggregate and soil structure. Soils are then able to absorb and retain moisture as well as cycle nutrients more productively. Nutrients are held in the upper layers of the soil and are held there by the soil cation exchange capacity (CEC).
The CEC increases as aggregate formation matures because the aggregate are providing the surface area for the nutrients to adsorb. Ag1000™ efficiently breaks down organic matter into stable humus, a key component to aggregate formation, by reducing oxidative forces that primarily rob the soil of Carbon and Nitrogen in the form of methane and ammonia gases. Once you have healthier soils, healthier crops follow quickly. Microbes help in the breakdown of nutrients to plant usable forms, making plant uptake of nutrients quicker and more effective.
This case study was done to test the application of Ag1000™ through the 2011-‐ 2012 growing seasons; two fields were tested (one with Ag1000™, one without). The fields were planted with Jalapeno Chile Peppers in 2011, followed by Wheat and Rye. Soil nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, boron, and organic matter were tested both pre-‐planting and after harvest to compare concentrations. Five leaf analyses were also done throughout the season to test nutrient uptake by the plant. Irrigation and application of other inputs such as fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides, and compost were done based on the grower standards. Yield between the treated and non-‐treated were also compared.
Below the sodium (esp %) is compared for the full Ag1000™ trial, Years 2010 – 2012. Overall during the entire trial a decrease in sodium was observed in both fields, but more so in the Ag1000™ field, with the lowest being 4.4%. Organic matter is also compared showing the Ag1000™ being consistently higher than the control field and steadily increasing each year compared to no change in block 1.

At Coyote Farms, the 2010 pumpkin Ag1000® trial showed no increase in calcium, but showed significant increases in potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium as well as a decrease in pH and significant decrease in sodium in the soil samples. It was also observed that pumpkin plants were less likely to get deceased from powdery mildew and better moisture retention was observed in both the soil and the fruit itself. Fruit load was also greatly increased with the use of Ag1000®. In a study on the nitrogen fixing bacteria in Ag1000® by A. Javaid, it was found that photosynthetic bacteria improved crop growth and yield by increasing photosynthesis, producing bioactive substances such as enzymes and hormones, and controlling soil decease (A. Javaid 2009).
The main issue Coyote Farms was running into was high salts and white crusting on the surface of the soil. Because of the microbes’ ability to add organic matter and better structure the soil, less water is usually needed in Ag1000® and fewer salts are added from irrigation water. Microorganisms like those in Ag1000®, also work against high salts in the soil by keeping salts from ionizing. Salt content was dramatically different between field with No Ag1000® and field with Ag1000®, field with Ag1000® having an ESP of 12.1% versus 7.1% for field with No Ag1000®.

Irrigation lines tend to get plugged with calcium carbonate, salts, biofilm, and roots. You can tell when the lines are getting plugged by checking the pressure gauges. Pressure will go up as the lines get plugged. The most common program for cleaning lines is to run sulfuric acid and then chlorine, flushing the lines between each application. This approach is costly, dangerous, corrodes equipment, and the chlorine is horrible for plants and soil.
Many growers over the years have reported to us that the Ag1000® seemed to be cleaning their lines. One farm brought his line pressure from 24psi down to 9 after 4 separate flushes. Each flush resulted in a black stinky water, cleaning out the muck in the lines as well as roots. The nice thing is that the water coming out of the lines from the flushing is not loaded with toxic chlorine and has not turned into a corrosive acid. This grower actually sucked up the water and used it as a foliar treatment on his 160 acres of grapes!
Here is how to clean your irrigation lines with Ag1000®:
Line Cleaning: Clean irrigation lines with an application of 5 gallons per acre, let sit in lines for 4-5 days (or longer if possible), and flush. Depending on how hard the water is, this may need to be done 2-4 times per year. The cost of the Ag1000® is less than sulfuric and it is much safer on people and equipment than sulfuric or bleach.
Continued use of Ag1000® in your farm program will keep the lines clean as long as you use the Ag1000®.
Please note, if you are using fine emitters, you will want to remove them prior to flushing. The amount of material coming through the lines will plug them. Another way to avoid this is if you have a large flush valve at the end of the line to flush out the line.
Pre-soak seeds before sowing with diluted Ag1000®. Soak time depends on the size of the seeds. The dilution is 1 part Ag1000® to 1,000 parts water.
Seed Size | Example | Time to Soak |
---|---|---|
Small Seeds | Mustard | 20-30 minutes |
Medium Seeds | Cucumber | 30-60 minutes |
Large Seeds | Pumpkin | 2-3 hours |
Transplants:
Make a solution of 1 part Ag1000® to 1,000 parts water. Prior to planting, dip plug in solution and plant.

Extensive research in the lab and field demonstrates that Ag1000® has tremendous potential in helping to improve soil structure, cation exchange capacity (CEC), balance soil pH, chelate salts, make nutrients available for plants, and increase moisture retention in soils. Ag1000® is a liquid culture of non-GMO beneficial microorganisms from 4 genus including Lactic Acid Bacteria, Bacillus Bacteria, Yeast, and Photosynthetic Bacteria that is generally applied through an irrigation system or sprayer.
Compared with conventional methods of reclamation, which generally take 2-3 years to fully reclaim such lands Ag1000® can play a pivotal role in the reclamation of saline-sodic land in the first year. In the presence of organic matter the microbes in Ag1000® begin to synergize with other indigenous species of bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes and soil fauna and flora. During the decomposition of organic matter these microbes synthesize and release useful substances such as organic acids (amino acids, nucleic acid, citric acids, acetic acids, lactic acids), alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, bioactive substances (vitamins, enzymes, hormones), sugars, polysaccharides, enhanced release of phosphates, fixing atmospheric N forming NH4 and NO3, break down highly complex and resistant compounds (cellulose, starch, gums, lignins), release antibiotic (streptomycin, actinomycin, neomycin), produce humus (fluvic acid, humic acids, humic) and release macro-and micro nutrients such as (N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu etc) and other products (fatty acids, chelates) into the soil solution.
Some reclamation projects have achieved reduction in pH from 9.8 to 6.8, ECe from 67 to 5 dSm-1and SAR from 79 to 11. This means that harmful soluble salts present in the saline-sodic soil and Na +present formed soluble salts NaCl and Na2SO4, which leached down to the lower layers of the loamy soil, the permeability of which is said to be moderate.
Microorganisms excrete organic acids, a type of chelant, which form ionic changes within salts and other contaminants so that they cannot interact with other elements or ions in the same manner. These reactions require carbon. Therefore we use a concentrated humate (Carbon) in either a liquid or a granular form. This is combined with our Ag1000® microbial solution at time of application. The Ag1000® is applied on the area. Tillage is not required the humate will naturally penetrate the soil with the next irrigation. The results are not only accelerated chelation of salts, but an increase in polysaccharides, increase in beneficial fungi growth, and overall increased soil tilth. This is all done with a relatively low input and labor cost.
Aggressive Program (1-year program):
- 100 gallons of Ag1000® to the soil per acre in irrigation water
- 200lbs of granular humate per acre to the soil after irrigation
Moderate Program (2-year program Each Year):
- 60 gallons of Ag1000® to the soil per acre in irrigation water
- 100lbs of granular humate per acre to the soil after irrigation
Low-Grade Program (4+ years program):
40 gallons Ag1000® per acre per year added in irrigation water applied with water trucks during growing season.
½ gallon per acre Ag1000® in each foliar feed, added to other nutrients in nutrient program.

Composting is easy with Ag1000®. Simply add 2 gallons Ag1000® per ton waste. Add water to reach the desired moisture content. Follow standard composting procedures with turning and monitoring temperatures.
The video on the right is of a visit with the City of Redding, California's Denis Carvalho. The City of Redding, under Denis' direction, was composting all of their green waste with Effective Microorganisms® from 1997 until his retirement in 2009. The initial reason for using Effective Microorganisms (EM) was for odor control. Denis quickly learned through experience that the use of EM increased the speed of processing, allowing the facility to turn over the area much faster and recycle much more wastes than they had previously.
Traditional composting follows certain guidelines, requiring temperatures to go up to 140-160ºF with lots of aeration. The materials are most commonly turned using a turner. A turner looks like an above-ground roto tiller. The turner not only allows for air to get into the materials, but also breaks up the chunks of material. Some turners are equipped with sprayers that allow for inoculation with water or enzymes or bacteria. The video on the left shows an operation in Deming, New Mexico using a turner from Mid-West Biosystems (an awesome machine by the way!). The piles in this video are turned when temperatures reach 145ºF. On average the piles are turned about 17 or 18 times over the course of 35-40 days. Using Ag1000® in the process allows for avoiding the lengthy maturing process which can add an addition 90-120 days before land application. Growers love this because they plant the same day they spread the compost without worrying about burning the plants!
Back in 2006 a trial was set up to examine the benefits of Effective Microorganisms® on a commercial aerobic windrow of green waste compost at a compost facility in Northern California. This facility uses a method of composting that requires a tremendous amount of turning. The finished compost is both consistent and high quality.
Lab analysis provided results that suggest the compost treated with EM was significantly more mature and stable than the control at the end of the testing period. The compost treated with EM had a Carbon to Nitrogen (C:N) ratio of 15:1. The C:N ratio for the untreated compost (control) was 18:1. Furthermore, the compost treated with the EM contained 5 times more nitrate than the control. The NO2: NH3 ratio for the compost treated with EM was 16:1 compared to 3:1 for the control. The compost treated with EM more intensely cycled carbon to nitrogen and more efficiently converted organic nitrogen into nitrate. Microbial analysis confirmed and quantified the visible increase in microbial activity. The heterotrophic, actinomycetes, and pseudomonad groups had significantly greater populations in the treated compost. The microbial diversity index for the treated compost was also greater than the control.

Compost tea is a great (and affordable) way to add billions of aerobic microbes to your soil. However, if you make compost tea with a poor quality compost, you will have poor quality compost tea. Therefore, we suggest that you make your compost with Ag1000® to ensure a high quality compost (see our composting section). Ag1000® increases the production of aerobic bacteria in compost and also speeds up the composting process. Once the compost is complete, you can make a high quality compost tea.
There are many easy guides on making compost tea. For a comprehensive overview of the instructions by the authority on compost teas see Dr. Elaine Ingham's work Understanding Compost Tea. The brewing process takes about 24 hours and requires application within 24 hours after aeration is complete.
Adding Ag1000® to the tea after the aeration cycle will increase the biodiversity of the tea, adding in facultative microbes and extend the shelf life of the tea to about 10 days. The extended shelf life is crucial to farmers who need some extra time due to rain events or other things that come in the way.
Once the aeration cycle is completed, add Ag1000® at a rate of 1:50 (1 gallon per 55-gallon drum works great!).
Foliar feeding rates will vary according to the size of the plant during the growing season. Our best programs have been starting at 1/2 gallon per acre per week and up to 5 gallons per acre per week. Leaves are sprayed until moist, not dripping wet.
We usually do a 3-5% solution of Ag1000®, a 2-5% nutrient solution, and a wetting agent, mixed in tank with water. Liquid humate or lignin could be added to the mix as well. When using conventional fertilizers, go with the lower dilution. With natural or organic fertilizers, you can go 5% or slightly higher, depending on the type of plant.
If applying pesticides, Ag1000® is compatible with most biological pesticides, but not synthetic ones. In general it is OK to tank mix with biological pesticides as long as the mixture is sprayed within an hour. Several synthetic pesticides have been tested and kill all the microbes in the product in as little as 30 seconds. If using synthetic pesticides, apply separately, waiting at least 24-48 hours between applications.
Application Equipment Consideration:
Best results are achieved when foliar sprays are finely atomized with a drifting mist. Any piece of equipment listed below will suit this purpose.
Purpose | |
---|---|
Orchard Fan Spray Rig | Both 3-point type and larger pull-behind PTO units work well (usually used for large acreage applications). |
Boom-Type Sprayers | Some advantage can be gained by increasing sprayer pressure, tilting the nozzles back to a 45º angle to allow the spray to drift onto the plants. |
Backpack Leaf Blower with Liquid Attachment | Good for applications from backyard up to 5 acres. |
Hand Pump Sprayer | Backpack units designed for up to 90 psi are good for backyard gardens up to 1 acre. |
Electrostatic Sprayer | Units impart a charge to the spray particles, causing them to adhere more readily to plants. |
When to Foliar Spray:
- Foliar feeding is most effective in the evening or in the early dawn, when temperatures are mild and wind is minimal.
- When wind is minimal, finely atomized sprays drift readily.
- Absorption is further enhanced when weather conditions are humid and moist. The presence of dew on the leaves facilitates foliar feeding.
- Absorption is improved when sprays also reach and coat the undersides of leaves where the majority of the plant's stomata are located.
When NOT to Foliar Spray:
- Do NOT spray during the height of the day (10:00 AM to 4:00 PM).
For Best Results:
- Foliar feed once per week during the growing season.
- Foliar feed in the evening.
- During very wet periods, foliar feed one to three times per week.
- A surfactant or wetting agent added to the solution decreases surface tension on the leaf and facilitates absorption.
Assessing the results:
Within as little as four hours of day light after the foliar application, the progress of the plants can be checked with a refractometer in a relatively simple process. Begin by extracting a sample of sap from several of the crop plants before foliar applications. By testing several possible blends using several spray bottles, you can determine the best blend to use. Then follow the instructions below:
- Squeeze the leaves or stems with a garlic press or some other tool.
- Place the extracted sap in the refractometer to measure and record the reading.
- Use a spray bottle to mist a small sample of foliar spray blend onto the plants.
- After a short time, extract and measure another sap sample.
- If the Brix has increased, apply foliar feeding with that specific blend.
- A "placebo" spray of distilled water should be tested at the same time to discount any changes.

Whether you are using an ebb and flood system, drip irrigation, and/or boom sprayers, you'll want to get a steady application of Ag1000® in the water for your plants. The regular application will help keep your lines clean, floors clean, as well as help the plants.
Applications:
- Building maintenance: Spray greenhouse glazing with Ag1000® diluted to 1oz per gallon of water (1:128) weekly or bi-weekly to clean glazing and maximize light transfer.
- Hydrate potting soil (same for soil less mixes) with 4 ounces of Ag1000® per 100 pounds of soil mix.
- Foliar spray at least once per week at a rate of 0.5-1oz Ag1000® per gallon of water.
- If irrigating daily, inject at a rate of 1/7oz Ag1000® per gallon per day (about 1:1,000).
- If using a water re-circulation system, inoculate at 1:500 and maintain dilution using injectors. You may find the need to flush the system from time to time. Water quality and hardness and nutrient usage will determine the cycles of cleaning and purging.

Tips for a success with Ag1000®
- For greens, apply the Ag1000® with a hose-end sprayer, backpack sprayer and dilute one ounce per gallon of water (1:128). For fairways, inject Ag1000® into the irrigation system at a rate of 1 gallon per acre per week for a total of 40 gallons per acre per year. It is best to apply Ag1000® once a week for maintaining optimal turf quality and health.
- Ag1000® does not provide many plant nutrients. Therefore fertilizers are needed. If using liquid fertilizers, Ag1000® can be added after fertilizers are diluted with water. Store fertilizers in separate tanks than the Ag1000® and inject into irrigation lines using a Mazzie® injector or a dosage pump.
- Use a "mulching mower" to chop and redeposit the grass clippings. Spray Ag1000® onto the turf after mowing. This enables the clippings to rapidly breakdown into stable organic matter for the soil. Organic matter particles provides a home for Ag1000® to establish in the soil.
- If soils are real compacted, salty, or showing signs of severe compaction, it may be necessary to inject the Ag1000® with additional products such as a wetting agent and liquid humate. The wetting agent will help with penetration and the humate will add much needed organic matter that will help with opening up the soil and chelation of salts.
Hydroponics systems can be completely in liquid or use small amounts of soils. Most of the nutrients are fed into the water that the plant roots rest in. Additional foliar applications may or may not be made, depending on the grower.
Aeroponics is a growing technique where the plants are not in a media. The same dilutions used for foliar sprays would apply for aeroponics, using the foliar rates with nutrients on both the leaves and the roots.
- 3% solution EM-1® Microbial Inoculant several times per week.
- Feed with a 2% solution of nutrients several times per week.
Water can also be conditioned using our 35mm Pipe Ceramics. For every 1,000 gallons of water in tanks, use 4 sets of the 35mm EMX Ceramic pipes. They can be put inside a 1 1/4" PVC pipe and plumbed directly into the main supply line. This will help condition the water and pull out dissolved solids in the water. If the unit is set up on a circulation system, you will notice it makes better use of the ceramics.
In the water lines, add Activated EM-1® starting at a rate of 1:1,000 (1 teaspoon per gallon) and as needed to maintain recommended dilution ratios with replacement water. Continue to use nutrient solutions as EM-1® is not a replacement for nutrients.
