EM･1 is the original and authentic Effective Microorganisms® formulated by Dr. Teruo Higa. It is the fundamental product of the EM brand. It is a liquid probiotic and contains different groups of microorganisms, including lactic acid bacteria. Because of the co-existence of these microorganisms, EM･1 and the metabolites it contains are able to activate native microorganisms in various environments and conditions and in many different fields such as agriculture, animal husbandry, environmental purification and health care.

EM-1® is OMRI Listed, meaning the product is allowed for certified organic production under the USDA National Organic Program. EM-1® is listed without restrictions which means that it can be used all the way up to harvest and even in washing of fruits and vegetables.

EM-1 Microbial Inoculant improves the health of the soil by adding live effective microorganism that increases nutrient availability to plants. 

Garden Applications: 

1 oz. (2 tablespoons) per gallon of water.

You can also add EM-1 concentrate to a suitable hose-end sprayer and spray directly onto plants, lawn or soil surfaces. One 32 oz. hose end sprayer (set to 1 oz./gal.) should cover about 1/8 acre. Apply once per week throughout the growing season.

Agricultural Applications:

Apply an average of 1 gallon per acre per week from sowing until harvest.

Fertile soil and biodiversity is important for organic farming. However, normally, sophisticated technology and a long period of time is needed to establish a productive organic farm. By actively using beneficial microorganisms, EM products speeds up this process, makes organic farming easier, and also helps to improve the yield and quality of produce.

Hydroponic Applications:

Add EM-1 as a 3% solution several times per week.

Household Applications:

Mix EM-1 with water at a rate of 1 oz per gallon of water. Water in or spritz onto plants with a bottle sprayer.

EM-1® is not a fertilizer. It does not contain a significant amount of any plant nutrients. EM-1® does help increase the efficiency of plant nutrient absorption and fertilizer availability to plants. Combined with applications of organic matter, a reduction in fertilizer/nutrient requirements is often a result of using EM-1®.

No. EM-1 is a concentrate that is ready to use straight from the bottle. Add 1oz to 1 gallon of water to use as a foliar spray or to water indoor or outdoor plants.

Activated EM-1 (AEM-1) provides an even more economical way to use EM-1. Activation takes 2 weeks and additional materials are required. 

Yes! Any surface that can be cleaned with water can be sprayed or soaked with EM-1® (1:10 dilution, 1 oz/gal for light colored fabrics). May take more than one application - may take a few weeks for total removal. Bokashi can be added to litter boxes or cages to control odors as well.

This is a result of some extra gas building up in the bottle and is perfectly normal. After all, the product is alive. The bacteria are thriving! We advise you to open the bottle slowly and let the gas blow off slowly, much like one would do with a shaken soda bottle.
