How does EM-1® work?
EM-1®: Effective Microorganisms® Concentrate, is a ready to use, microbial soil amendment packed full of beneficial microbes. These beneficial microbes help boost plant growth and yields, improve soil fertility and quality, and strengthen a plants natural resistance to disease and pests.
The host of beneficial microbes, including photosynthesizing bacteria, multiple strains of lactic acid bacteria, yeasts and more help break down organic matter in the soil, turning it into food for plants and release essential minerals like nitrogen.
One of the major beneficials in EM-1® are photosynthetic bacteria. In soil, they've been shown to increase root growth, and produce sugars that feed other beneficial bacteria. On the leaf surface, they produce phytohormones, protective molecules that increase growth while helping plants defend against environmental stresses, reducing the risk of root rot, temperature stress, pest attack and diseases.

For best results, follow these simple tips:

Avoid watering the tomato leaves.

Remove the suckers from the bottom of the stem, these are the older leaves that increase the risk of disease.

Create good airflow between your tomato plants by not planting to close together.

EM-1® is a combination of yeasts, actinomycetes and two kinds of bacteria, photosynthetic and LAB (lactic acid bacteria), that help to fight off fungal diseases like blight.

To help prevent blight, water with a dilution of EM-1® at the base of your tomato plants and spray the plant's leaves weekly throughout the growing season.
One of the beneficial microorganisms in EM-1® is Lactobacillus or lactic acid bacteria. Lactic acid bacteria is in fermented foods for preservation. Also found in the soil and on plant surfaces, lactobacillus can protect against pests.
A symbiotic relationship forms when lactobacillus eats the sugars or sap on the leaf. The microbe then provides pathogen protection to the plant. The microbe produces natural antimicrobial and antifungal compounds as waste. Compounds such as hydrogen peroxide, acetic acid, and lactic acid.
A second microbe in EM-1® is Saccharomyces, a beneficial yeast. By producing an enzyme called chitinase, Saccharomyces renders pathogenic fungi useless.
