DISASTER CLEAN-UP PROJECTS

KUMAMOTO, JAPAN - TORRENTIAL RAIN DAMAGE

Kumamoto, Japan recently experienced damage brought on by torrential rain in July of 2020. Heavy rain caused the Kuma River to overflow into Kumamoto, where more than 8,000 houses were flooded. In some areas of the city, the waters reached into the second floor. This caused soil, sand and sewage sludge to flood into buildings and residential areas and resulted in major sanitary issues and foul odors.

Area officials worked with a local EM® Group to get Activated EM•1® sprayed in the area as soon as possible. 100 liters (26.4 gallons) of Activated EM•1® was sprayed per 100m² for places like walls, pillars, and floors. Areas were then dried to prevent re-growth of mold.

A total of 25,000 liters (6,600 gallons) of Activated EM•1® was used on 190 houses over 2 months. Many residents reported that "bad odor disappeared immediately" and "the air became refreshing". Residents also saw a significant decrease in mold.

APPLICATION METHODS

FLOODING:

Flooding can cause a variety of issues depending on the size a severity of the flood. Whatever the water comes in contact with will begin to wear down and contaminate the water. Flood water can come into contact with paints, cleaners, fertilizers, sewage and a variety of other harsh chemicals before even reaching your area.

Once the flood waters have receded, EM•1® can effectively be used for odor control, help breakdown organic solids (sewage, manures), and remediate any soils or aquatic environments that may have been polluted. For small flooding issues, EM•1® can help clean your home in a chemical-free way.

RECCOMENDATIONS:

Inside:

SALINITY PROBLEMS (SEAWATER FLOODING)

Some floods may involve seawater and damage soil and crop areas. Such was the case for rice paddies and shrimp ponds in the after math of a tsunami in Thailand. Below is how EM Kyusei in Thailand handled the situation;

Apply EM Bokashi before replanting and flooding of paddiesPlant rice and water in with Activated EM•1® Plant different plants until soil is remediated. Barley and wheat have high salinity capabilities.
