EM•1® Case Study: Fruit Trees

Effective Microorganisms have been used on fruit trees worldwide for decades. Activated EM•1® ( AEM) can be used on all fruit trees in all climates. AEM® is a ready-to-use soil conditioner, comprised of Effective Microorganisms. Activated EM•1® increases nutrient cycling in your soil and helps improve drainage, aeration, moisture retention and soil structure. Overall this decreases fertilizer requirements while improving yield.

Because Activated EM•1® contains live microbes it also improves water permeability. The bugs go to work in the soil, increasing beneficial microorganisms and other organisms, this creates more pores for water and air. The increased permeability can decrease your water usage.

RESEARCH AND RESULTS

ORANGES

Antola Family's Orange Farm - Huaral Province, Peru

The orange farm operated by the Antola Family is located in Huaral province, north of Lima, Peru.

They use EM Technology® for soil and foliar applications to grow Tangelo and W-Murcott varieties. In addition to EM•1®, they add fish residue to create a fermented liquid fertilizer that is applied every week at 20 liters per hectare (or 5.2 gallons per 2.4 acres).

As a result of activated EM•1®, 80% of their oranges are high quality and they have started exporting them. After using activated EM•1® for 6 years, they can harvest 90 tons of oranges per hectare.

A neighboring farm not using activated EM•1® is getting yields of 55 tons per hectare. In addition, with the use of only fish residue as fertilizer, Antola's Farm has reduced chemical fertilizer costs by 40%.

*Note: This study used a method of activating EM•1® that requires fermentation with molasses and water. With AEM®, this is already done for you and is ready to use.

Field experiment on a 17-hectare commercial citrus orchard in Limeira Country in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The experiment was a randomized block design, with four replicates for each treatment. Soil in the area was well-drained clay soil, but high pH and moderate organic matter. No chemical fertilizer, lime or pesticide had been applied for 3 years prior to the study.

In addition to an increase in yield, soil organic mater increased as well as macronutrients Ca, Mg, and K.

For most fruit trees, we recommend anywhere between 25 to 45 gallons of AEM® per acre per year depending on number of irrigations and whether foliar spray is being added. Start soil applications at bud break.

25 Gallons per acre in the soil, divided by number of irrigations

15 Gallons per acre foliar, divide into 3 to 5 Gallons per spray

Foliar spray should be applied in the morning or evenings. Conventional farmers can use AEM® with most of their programs. Do not mix synthetic chemicals with the microbes in concentrated, non-diluted, form. Many pesticides, such as Round-Up are antibiotic in nature and kill all the microbes within seconds of mixing. Therefore, if pesticides are to be used, please wait at least 48 hours between applications of pesticide and AEM®.
